CETENMA EVALUATES THE POTENTIAL AND IMPACTS OF CIRCULAR FERTILISERS

FER-PLAY is a coordination and support action within Horizon Europe (101060426 – HORIZON-CL6-2021-ZEROPOLLUTION-01-09, fer-play.eu) that maps and assesses the potential and impacts of circular fertilisers produced from secondary raw materials. In order to do this, the project made public a Database providing extensive information on 61 relevant value chains, with the seven most promising (see figuer below) being selected for further assessment following a multi-criteria approach.

CETENMA is coordinating the project and leads the life cycle sustainability assessment (LCSA) work package. In the last months, CETENMA has been actively involved in many project activities, some of them are highlighted here.

The first one is related to an open event that CETENMA organised in Cartagena on 19/10/2023 right after the project General Assembly to get feedback and showcase project results. The in-person event counted with 50 participants representing EU projects (e.g. The NOVAFERT project represented by University of Vic and Bioazul), circular fertiliser producers (counting with the presence of the president of the Spanish compost Network), farmers and public authorities (e.g. Jesús Díez from Junta de Castilla y Leon, which are a pilot territory of the CCRI). The event was very successful and included a field visit guided by one of the farmers that participated in the farmers roundtable.

CETENMA, together with our project partner NURESYS and CIC, participated in lecturing activities of a Master course on “Low carbon technologies and sustainable chemistry” organized by the University of Bologna. In addition, CETENMA submitted the candidature of FER-PLAY to the Go!ODS awards (reconocimientosgoods.com).

CETENMA staff Elisa Gambuzzi and José M. Soriano Disla, are coauthors of a recent publication led by our partners from CIC on Fertilizer Focus Magazine entitled “Circular fertilizers for healthy soils.”

Last but not least, FER-PLAY has launched a series of surveys in order to evaluate the social acceptance of circular fertilisers among several stakeholders, which we invite readers to fill, or to forward to other relevant stakeholders (mainly producers and local administration representatives).
